Message from the President

Hello Paddlers,

Enclosed you will find a summer paddling schedule and calendar, as well as a few resources. Besides this schedule you must remain in contact with the club website and the message phone. Many trips are arranged via these two vehicles.

The phone number is 899-1872 and the ACCESS CODE is 899, not the two-digit code as listed in the spring Bow and Stern. If you have trouble making the phone work I encourage you to call me at 899-1865 to report the problem. The websitc address is http://www.vtpaddlers.net/index.html.

The Indian (Hudson) River in releasing daily until June 24th and after that will be releasing Tue, Thur, Sat, and Sunday from 10:00 to 11:00 am. The Indian River Water Dept. phone is 518-648-5303, M-Th 6:00 am to 3:30 pm and Friday only until 10:00 am. I would call if you plan to go over ... especially if we have a dry summer.

The Beaver River in upstate NY northeast of Lowville will have releases this Sept. on what is normally a dry section of river. The three affected sections range in length from one mile to about four miles and in difficulty from class III to V.

Questions regarding these releases can be directed at Chris Koll (315) 652-8397 or e-mail ckoll1234@aol.com. Tom Yurista from the VPC has apparently run the sections last year. The various sections release Sept 4,5,6,11,12,18, and 19.

The Pemi at Bristol NH is releasing at 1000-1500 July 10 and if water is available, July 11. Also the same schedule for Aug. 21 and 22, all from 9 am to 4 pm. Faith Knapp, at 802-649-5106, is leading a trip July 11.

The Black R. near Watertown, NY flows all summer and has a festival the weekend of Julv 24th and 25th. This is a class 3-4 river - anybody want to lead a trip to Watertown?

The Ottawa R. in Canada flows all summer and they have a rodeo the weekend of Sept 4-6. I have never been to the Ottawa- anybody want to paddle it sometime when the level gets down to around 4 feet?

OTHER NON PADDLING BUSINESS

The VPC will not sponsor an instructional clinic this summer, for a variety of reasons, but most are closely associated with the fact that no one wanted to organize the event. We will have to regroup and have one next year, see what the attendance is like and decide if it is something that is no longer warranted.

This fall is an elections cycle and the club will be looking for at least 2 and possibly 4 new officers and a few people willing to make a commitment to the summer of 2000 instructional clinic. Call any officer if you are interested.

Please continue to supply us with your e-mail address if you move or are new online. Rich Larsen is the guy, at larsen007@aol.com.

Continue to send Mike Fullerton your trip reports for the fall Bow and Stern. His address is 35 North Calais Rd. East Calais, VT 05650-8067 or e-mail at mfullert@together.net.
